Ricky Martin is set to be taking part in the first Broadway production of the classic story of Evita.

The Tony Award-winning musical hasn’t been adapted to the Broadway stage since it 2979 New York release but director Michael Gardnage plans to change that in Spring 2012.

He has cast the Puerto Rican singer, who recently came out as gay after years of speculation, as the character of Che and also casted an Argentine actress named Elena Roger as Evita to help with the authenticity. This role wont be unknown territory for Elena though as she undertook the same role in London’s West End in 2006.

Ricky is said to be pleased about the future it holds and said about his new Broadway role in a statement "I've been blessed with the opportunity to perform on many of the world's largest concert stages, but I've never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater,"

Director Michael Grandage reportedly said of the new venture and his latest cast "It is very exciting to bring this new production of Evita to Broadway with an Argentine woman in the title role for the very first time…With Ricky Martin joining the company, we now have an opportunity to make the production even more authentic”

The revival of "Evita" is scheduled to open in spring 2012.
