Brutal pre-watershed scenes of gay EastEnders character Christian Clarke's beating have been blasted as too violent.

Christian (John Partridge) was attacked by a Muslim gang last Thursday after he admitted his affair with married Syed Masood (Marc Elliott).

Around 40 viewers complained that children could have been traumatised.

Others claimed the violent scenes last Thursday could encourage anti-gay assaults.



The BBC said it was careful to ensure shows were "appropriate for their time slots".
