The transsexual son of singer/songwriter Cher has stepped out with his girlfriend at the weekend, in his first major public appearance.

haz Bono attended the 21st Annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards in California with girlfriend Jennifer Elia on his arm.

The 41-year-old has undergone a female-to-male gender transition over the past few years. He is hoping to complete his gender reassignment next month.

Chaz came out as a lesbian on the cover of the American gay magazine the Advocate in the 90s when he was 18.

In the past, Chaz has described his decision to live as a man as “living the life I always wanted to live,” and "the best I've ever made.”

Last year in an exclusive TV interview Chaz said: "Gender is between your ears, not between your legs. I've felt male as far back as I can remember. As a child it was really clear. I felt like a boy."
