James Arthur is feared to be on the brink of a breakdown after being warned his homophobic slur could have cost him his career.

Earlier this month, the X Factor winner, branded unknown rapper Micky Worthless as a "f****ing queer*, immediately coming under fire from the LGBT community, as well as former X Factor contestants such as Lucy Spraggan.

Despite his apology for using offensive language and claiming he does not have a homophobic bone in his body, fans have been returning his CDs, shunning the star in their droves.

Simon Cowell has been calling him, and record producers are now concerned for his mental health, especially as he has talked about attempting suicide in the past.

A source close to the former homeless busker said: “James is devastated by the whole thing. It’s really hit him hard and he’s struggling to cope with all the anger and hate he’s received.

“He can’t believe it’s got to the point where people are returning his music because they think he’s homophobic."

Despite this PR nightmare, James is still aiming to perform at the X Factor on 2nd December.
