One of New York’s most famous gay couples Neil Patrick Harris and his long-term fiancé David Burtka are elated to now finally be able to set their wedding date, following the decision made by the state to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The ‘How I Met Your Mother star has been engaged to partner Burtka for over five years but they have yet been able to seal their love due to gay marriage being banned in their home state.

Tweeting before the law being passed on Friday the star tweeted: "I'd sure love to get married. Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today.

My family would really appreciate it."

Following the passing of the bill he then took to the social network to describe his joy over the decision: "David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."

The pair recently fathered twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace via surrogate last October.
