The ABC network has released a statement stating that cutting away from the moment was an honest mistake, after they were scrutinized for failure to show the viewers the same-sex kiss following Sunday’s Academy Awards when award presenters Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin had an impromptu moment on stage.

The locking-lips moment was caught on camera and by people in the auditorium but the network failed to show its home viewers the two dashing men shared a moment on the famous stage.

A number of complaints followed about the decision to not show the unscripted kiss, which also involved a dance between the two men, as many believed the network was discriminating against the idea of same-sex relations, but ABC has insisted it was an honest mistake.

Academy Award producer Bruce Cohen has released the following statement:

“It [the dance and the kiss] was unscripted, and the plan in the truck was always to cut to Penelope in the audience applauding Josh’s and Javier’s introduction, so that is what happened, just as they were starting to dance.

Josh and Javier’s moment (I saw them start to dance, but, to be honest, I have no idea if they kissed — that’s the first I’ve heard of that) would have made a great TV moment, but since no one knew it was coming, we cut to the gorgeous Ms. Cruz as planned. By the time, we cut back from her close-up, Josh and Javier were walking to the podium.”
