Britney Spears has been voted the ultimate gay icon in a latest poll with over 31% of people voting in favour of the pop princess.

In Orange County’s Equality Project’s poll members of the public voted who they felt to be the ultimate gay icon.

Ms Spears took over the prime position from the likes of Cher and Madonna managed to bag the second position.

According to contactmusic.com Equality Project's Joel Waddell said about the top two: "When Madonna puts out a new album, she will be on top again.

Madonna is the greatest icon the gay community has ever had."

Lady Gaga came in third with 22% and the ‘Teenage Dream’ singer Katy Perry got 12% of the vote.

Britney’s video for her new single ‘Hold It Against Me’ will debut today.
