Ellen DeGeneres and celebrity blogger Perez Hilton have come out on top as the most popular gay icons social networking site Twitter.

After an investigation by gay title, The Advocate, it was revealed that when comparing the online popularity to some of our A-list stars, chatshow host Ellen DeGeneres had the highest number of people following her tweets on her daily movements.

Coming behind the former idol judge’s 5 million followers in second place was queen of the web Perez Hilton. Blogger Hilton, who is famous for his catty remarks and his gateway site to worldwide celebrity gossip, has over 2 million people clicking on to see what the quirky journalist is up to.



Third place was Stephen Fry who has 1.7 million followers.

The top 10 went as follows:
