The new guidelines, which were announced marking the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Month, makes it extremely simple for people to apply for change in gender shown on the passport.


The passport applicant, who wished to make the change, now has to present a certification from an attending medical physician that the applicant has undergone appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition.

"It is also possible to obtain a limited-validity passport if the physician's statement shows the applicant is in the process of gender transition," the State Department said announcing the introduction of the new guidelines.

Informing that no additional medical records are required for the procedure, the official statement added, "Sexual reassignment surgery is no longer a prerequisite for passport issuance.

A Consular Report of Birth Abroad can also be amended with the new gender."
