88 gay couples wed in Mexico city already

Since Mexico City passed the law to allow gay marriage 88 same-sex couples have taken the plunge into the world of marriage.

The law which came into action on March 4 has now seen 50 male couples marry and a further 38 women couples follow suit and make their relationship legally binding, reported a statement from Mexico City government.

The statement also read that a further 37 more couples are expected to tie the knot between April and June.

Despite disapproval from the Roman Catholic Church and President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party the law passed and same-sex couples are given the same right as those of a heterosexual couple.



A legislation passed prior to the gay marriage bill which gave same sex couples the same right as those of a heterosexual couple and also the opportunity to adopt.
