The family of an openly gay candidate for the mayor of Mississippi have said that his body had been beaten and burned.

34 year-old Marco McMillian's body was found last week on a riverbank but the coroner has only now released the information, and 22 year-old Lawrence Reed has been charged with his murder.

The family was told that McMillian had been dragged under a fence and left near a levee last week, before being discovered on Tuesday with bruises and burns on parts of his body.

Reed was allegedly driving McMillian's SUV when it was involved in a head-on crash shortly before the body was found, though the connection between the two men remains unclear at present.
