Newly released data shows the number of Michigan households led by same-sex couples rose 42% over the past decade.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that Michigan had 21,782 households run by either two men or two women in 2010. That's up from 15,368 reported in 2000.

Demographers and gay-rights advocates say despite the increase, the census probably undercounted the number of same-sex households because many gay and transgender people remain reluctant to go public.

Still, Denise Brogan-Kator of the group Equality Michigan says the report shows that Michigan is becoming more tolerant.

Same-sex households remain a tiny minority in Michigan. They make up less than 1% of the total, which is 3.8 million.
