Police at Harvard University are investigating vandalism to about 40 books dealing with gay issues at the school's Lamont Library, the student newspaper The Crimson reports.
The paper says a police report filed Friday by library staff indicates the books appeared to be vandalized with urine three weeks ago. Police spokesman Steven Catalano told the Crimson in an e-mail that "the HUPD has zero tolerance for any bias-related incidents or crimes."
Evelynn Hammonds, dean of Harvard College, told the Crimson that as "a community, we will continue to affirm our shared values of dignity and respect for everyone in our community."
The library staff members found an empty bottle next to the vandalized books that may have contained the urine, library spokeswoman Beth Brainard told the Crimson. Brainard said that the library staff assessed the value of the books before reporting the incident. The books—estimated to be worth a few thousand dollars—will be discarded.
"Once the urine is poured, they can't really fix ( the books)," she said.
Marco Chan, co-chair of the Harvard College Queer Students and Allies, called the incident "extremely frustrating" and "disconcerting."
