Britain's youngest Mayor is gay

Britain has now elected its youngest Mayor to date and he is an openly gay young 23-year-old man.

Ian Campbell, was recently elected as Labour councillor for East Retford West and has now been elected as the Mayor of Retford, Nottinghamshire.

In the past Campbell has been highly known for his work amongst the gay community and as an avid campaigner for gay rights.

The young man was last year named as Nottingham's Young Person of the Year for his work on tackling homophobic bullying, but this ifluentiail young person has a had a troubled upbringing himself, as his parents failed to come to terms with his sexuality and kicked him out, leaving him homeless for eight months.



Defying the odds he has continued to go from strength to strength, speaking to the local Retford Times he says: "Everything has come along so quickly. It's astonishing.

"I think I will be able to balance the roles perfectly well.

"In fact, being the mayor will only enhance the way I represent my ward."
"I never thought in a million years that I would be in this position.

"Everything is the opposite to what it was a year ago. I had no job, no place to call my own and now it is very, very different."
