Athlete’s take your marks, GMFA/RVT Gay Sports Day is set to explode onto Vauxhall Spring Gardens on August Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August 2011.
Gay Sports Day is one of the biggest dates on the LGBT community calendar. Last year the event was supported by ultimate gay icon Kylie Minogue and rugby legend and anti-homophobic bullying campaigner, Ben Cohen, who donated a personally signed jock strap for the celebrity auction which received worldwide coverage. In previous years, small screen goddess Joanna Lumley has also donated to the auction.
Registration is now open for this year’s event at
The Gay Sports Day is an institution dating back to the 80s. This is the fifth successive year that GMFA, the gay men’s health charity, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern have joined forces to host the event.
Matthew Hodson, Head of Programmes at GMFA, commented: “Sports Day has become a fixture in the summer calendar and each year the crowd gets bigger and bigger and the competition gets more intense. The teams make a huge effort, with some amazing costumes and plenty of competitive spirit. This year we reckon we’re going to have our biggest Sports Day ever, so expect more fun, frolics and frivolity, and plenty of surprises.”
Each team of five collects sponsorship for the event. There will be three trophies: one for the winning team, one for the team that raises the most money and one for the team with the best outfits.
The money raised will go towards helping GMFA carry out its vital work with gay men’s health issues, including sexual health, general wellbeing, and self-esteem. Money will also go to two organisations that help look after the local Vauxhall community - Vauxhall City Farm, a working farm that volunteers transformed from a derelict piece of land back in the 70s, and The Friends of Spring Gardens, which helps maintain the land where Sports Day takes place.
Matthew adds: “Sports Day is all about fun, celebration and giving back to the community. We’re expecting regular teams from previous years as well as plenty of new faces, all competing for glory. So whether you want to show off your sporting prowess, your finest fancy dress, or just to cheer from the sidelines, we hope to see you there.”
Places for teams are strictly limited, so entry is on a first-come, first-served basis. To make sure your team enters the event, please register as soon as possible at
The event will start at 1pm in Spring Gardens, Vauxhall (behind the Royal Vauxhall Tavern).
