Former MP Chris Smith has been awarded, Freedom of the Borough in Islington, for his work in name of the community.

Smith, now known as Lord Smith of Finsbury, was the first MP to come out as gay back in 1984. He has now been awarded the Freedom of the Borough for his dedication to the community and is work to help achieve equality in the area of Islington, where received the award at a ceremony in the local Town Hall of Islington.

The Labour MP and former Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport was not only the first to come out as gay but also to reveal his positive HIV status.
